Backup types on 828D
- Internal Save Data: Creates an internal snapshot to recover after power events; use before long shutdowns.
- You can access the blog article titled “How to Save data back up internally “directly via the following link.
- Setup Archive (*.ard): Full external backup of NC, PLC, Drive, and HMI data; recommended before upgrades, service, or machine changes.
Prerequisites
- A known‑good USB flash drive, inserted in the front USB port; keep free space >1 GB for software packages, and ensure filesystem compatibility with 828D.
- Manufacturer level access on Operate; default service password is “S*NR*S$” (This password is only indicative and not correct. You must contact your machine manufacturer for the correct password).
- Stable power; do not remove media or switch off during save/restore/update.
Quick internal “Save data” (pre-shutdown)
- Press Menu Select → Setup → Save data, then confirm to snapshot internal data for recovery after an extended power‑off period.
- To Know more about how to save updated data please read our blog how to save updated data in Siemens 828 D.
- Use this when you only need a fast internal backup before downtime; it is not a substitute for an external archive.
Full external archive (create *.ard)
- Log into Manufacturer level: Menu Select → Setup → enter password “S*NR*S$”(This password is only indicative and not correct. You must contact your machine manufacturer for the correct password) to unlock Setup Archive functions.
- Open Setup → Archive → Create setup archive; select data classes NC, PLC, Drive, HMI for a complete backup.
- Choose destination as USB; name the file with machine ID and date for traceability, then confirm to generate the archive.
- Verify the archive exists on the USB; retain multiple dated copies off-machine for redundancy.
- Now we can see the pictures of these pages to learn better.
- First of all we need to apply emergency push button.

After pressing the setup you will find button Set password in Vertical row.

Input the default password “S*NR*S$” (This password is only indicative and not correct. You must contact your machine manufacturer for the correct password).

After inputting the Password you will find Current access level will be changed to the Manufacturer level

Press the extend key untill you didnot find Setup Archive Page.

Select Create Setup Archive and Press OK button. Then new screen will be displayed.

When you select all data and press OK button then new screen will appear.

After pressing Yes Button system will ask about the path where you want to save Back up .Either in USB/Flash Card .

After Selecting the storage device this will ask the name of back up .For all back Up we should write the name of all backup with the date of taking back up .For example per image we have put the name of ALL BACKUP41125.

.
After pressing OK all BACK UP should be start to transfer in USB/Flash Card as per desired

After completion of Process .BACKUP will be saved in USB/FLASH CARD.

What the archive includes
- NC data (machine/channel MDs, tool tables as configured), PLC user program/data, drive datasets, and HMI configuration if selected.
- From SW 4.94+, certain data are cleaned during upgrades; ensure a complete archive exists beforehand.
Reloading an archive (*.ard)
- On SINUMERIK Operate, go to Setup → Archive → Read setup archive; select the *.ard on USB.
- Choose full restore (NC, PLC, Drive, HMI) or selective classes (e.g., only PLC) as needed; confirm and execute.
- After completion, reboot the control to activate all restored datasets and re-home axis per machine procedure.

Version/interoperability cautions
- When restoring older archives to newer PPUs, deselect HMI data if SW/HMI platform differs (e.g., PU275.5) per upgrade notes.
- Always take a new, complete archive on the target software after successful upgrade and commissioning validation.
Good practices from the field
- Use a dedicated, labeled service USB and keep only the required *.ard file.
- Maintain both an internal Save data and an external *.ard before any risky change; the internal snapshot gives quick fallback, the archive gives full recovery.
- Document backup names with machine, site, and date; store offsite copies to protect against local media loss.
Minimal operator checklist
- Create archive: USB in → Manufacturer level → Setup Archive → Create → select NC/PLC/Drive/HMI → save to USB → verify.
- Restore archive: Setup Archive → Read → select classes → execute → reboot → re-reference axis.
When to call support
- Archive errors, version conflicts, or boot/update failures after following the above; provide alarm numbers and logs for faster resolution.
